The Recyclobot

Recycling should be a glorified practice. It’s beneficial for every species and the planet itself. While attending NEIT, an instructor assigned us the task of inspiring children and their parents to be more conscious of recycling.

We would need to construct a “bot” from recycled products, which would be used as the main subject in a double-sided poster design. The front of the poster would feature the bot in all its’ glory. The back side was to be used as an instructional blueprint describing the steps for building the robot. The idea was to make it a fun project for parents to present to their children. The end goal was to design it in a way that would motivate the child to recycle.

I began with some preliminary sketches to figure out how I was going to construct my bot from recyclable items. My first idea was a piggy bank.

As much as I liked this idea, I couldn’t just stop there. Besides, I thought it might have trouble staying on its’ feet.

The second idea that I drew up was wind chime bot.

I liked the first idea of making a bank. I would look through my recycled products to see what I could put together. I found more pizza boxes than anything so I spent hours wondering how to implement them in my design. Eventually I put something together with the items I had available to me.

After constructing the bot, I spray painted it blue and took it outside for a photo shoot. My instructor saw me working with this photo and brought it to my attention that it wasn’t very kid-friendly. I agreed, as it was a pretty grungy-looking shot taken in an alleyway.

I had to take the bot out to another location for a more kid-friendly shoot. I decided I would do so at the golf course I worked for.

I think the final result came out much better.

I took my photo into photoshop to make a few small tweaks. I crafted a playful logo and positioned it on the front side of the poster above my bot.

I would then follow up with the blueprint on the back side. The results were placed into a mockup image and pasted just under this text.
